A Vehicle Identification Number, abbreviated to VIN, is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle when it is manufactured indicating its origin and specifications. What does a Vehicle Identification Number look like?
The VIN is made up of 17 characters including numbers and letters except I, O and Q to avoid confusion with the numbers 1 and 0. The VIN has no spaces, nor special characters and the last 6 characters must be numerical digits. An example VIN:

How many digits are in a Vehicle Identification Number?

The VIN is 17 characters long and characters 12-17 must be numeric only. This standard was introduced in 1981 to unify identification on a global scale. Vehicles manufactured before this may have different styles of VINs.
How Is a Vehicle Identification Number structured?
A VIN has three sections that identify the vehicle’s manufacturer and origin, describe its key characteristics and uniquely distinguish it from other vehicles.
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
The first three characters of the VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI), telling you who made the vehicle and where the manufacturer is based.
The first character (it can be a letter or number) indicates the region of origin, while the following characters work together to identify the manufacturer within that region, with additional country‑level differentiation applied where required.

Germany is already implied by the first character, so the remaining characters mainly distinguish the manufacturer, not the country.

In broad regional groupings, the WMI provides country‑level distinction, alongside manufacturer identification.

Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
The Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) forms the middle part of the VIN, from character 4 to 9. It tells you key characteristics of the vehicle such as model, body style, engine type and more. Manufacturers encode the VDS differently, so you will need to check the VIN schema they provide to interpret the characters.


Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS)
The Vehicle Identifier Section, made up of the last eight characters, identifies the model year (character 10), assembly plant (character 11) and serial number (characters 12-17). This formula means that no two vehicles have the same VIN, even if they share the same make and configuration.
Where can you find the VIN on a vehicle?

The VIN is located in several places on a vehicle so that it’s easy to verify and hard to remove. Depending on the manufacturer, you might find it:
- On the dashboard, visible through the lower corner of the windscreen on the driver’s side.
- Driver’s door frame or door pillar
- Under the bonnet
- Chassis or frame
- Boot or spare wheel
The VIN can also be found on vehicle registration documents and insurance paperwork.

Decoding each VIN character reveals a vehicle’s:

Insurers can also use VINs to cross-check vehicle information with what’s declared on policies to confirm the vehicle exists and is correctly identified. In this way, VINs also help insurers detect and prevent fraud. Since each vehicle has its own VIN, duplicates or inconsistencies in vehicle numbers provided by clients are often a strong fraud signal.
When should you check a Vehicle Identification Number?
You need to check the VIN to carry out most official vehicle-related activities, including purchasing a used vehicle, verifying registration documents, performing safety recalls, insuring a vehicle or updating fleet records. VINs help fleet operators keep accurate documentation and spot fraud or errors in asset management.
What is the difference between a VIN, a chassis number and an engine number?
On most modern vehicles, chassis number and VIN refer to the same thing. Chassis number is an older, informal term referring to the number stamped on the vehicle’s chassis. The correct technical term today, however, is VIN.
Engine number identifies the engine itself and, by extension, its size and power output. An engine number is not globally standardised or unique to a vehicle. Engines can therefore be replaced and kept track of without changing the VIN.
