TomTom Telematics and sijox/Signal-Iduna Group have won Telematik Markt’s 2015 Telematik Award for Insurance Telematics category with the ‘AppDrive powered by TomTom’ insurance solution. The jury of experts, consisting of independent representatives from science and industry, was impressed by the connected car solution, which provides users with driver behaviour data via an innovative app.

AppDrive powered by TomTom provides actionable data insights on key aspects of driver behaviour, such as harsh braking, steering and acceleration, to a driver’s smartphone. Policy-holders using the app benefit from an immediate discount on the sijox insurance package My Mobility from Signal Iduna. This discount will increase if they show a commitment to responsible driving, encouraging young drivers to adopt a safer, and more efficient driving style.

AppDrive powered by TomTom is based on the LINK 100 connected car platform, which comprises a Bluetooth OBD dongle (LINK 100), a smartphone Software Development Kit and an ISO 27001:2013-certified data centre. Other insurance companies also use this platform as a basis to develop usage-based insurance solutions.

Thomas Becher, Vice President Business Development at TomTom Telematics, said: The jury’s decision rewards our efforts in the area of usage-based insurance and the role of our telematics technology in the development of the connected car. This award also strengthens our ambition to make field-tested business technologies available in normal passenger cars.

Awards were presented in nine categories at this year’s Telematik Awards from a total of 107 applications.
