Snapshot

  • 88% of the 107-strong fleet have transitioned to EV
  • 6% insurance premium reduction
  • Insurance claims down 80% since introducing camera telematics
  • Maintenance costs down from average of £27,000 to £4,000 per month
  • Strong driver retention with drivers reporting lower stress

The company

The company

Topspeed Couriers is a leading UK specialist in the secure transport of high‑risk, regulated and sensitive goods, trusted nationwide for almost four decades. Their commitment to sustainability is equally ambitious, with a target of achieving a fully electric fleet by 2027. Since 2022, the team has invested £4 million in electric vans and reduced diesel vehicles to single digits, while using Webfleet data to manage change day to day.

The challenge

The challenge

Government frameworks required a formal carbon reduction plan, which pushed Topspeed to baseline emissions and act. Early facilities upgrades, like LEDs and HVAC improvements, made the office nicer but barely moved the needle against a diesel bill that dominated emissions. At the same time, the first EVs surfaced practical hurdles drivers know well. Public charging was inconsistent, range anxiety was real and policies for reimbursement, home charging and duty of care all needed tightening. In secure logistics, failure isn’t an option, so any transition had to protect service certainty.

Operational pinch points

  • Public charging reliability and tariffs varied by operator
  • Winter range drops hit planning and utilisation
  • Drivers needed EV‑specific coaching, not just keys and a handover
  • Customers increasingly asked for credible decarbonisation

The solution

The solution

With Webfleet, Topspeed brought live location, vehicle status and driver behaviour into one place. The team uses connected cameras, driver feedback and navigation prompts to help drivers anticipate and drive smoothly. Planners rely on visibility for ETAs and use policy‑led prompts so drivers add a short top‑up charge where needed. Operations can also surface fuel and CO₂ data for connected diesel vehicles to support carbon reporting alongside the EV transition.

Operational benefits

  • Planners use Webfleet’s live view to check destinations are set and give accurate ETAs to customers
  • Drivers receive in cab feedback on harsh braking, harsh steering and coasting, supporting smoother, safer driving
  • Teams can “see the charge points” in the platform to support planning and driver briefings
  • Connected cameras provide video evidence to support claims and disputes
  • For remaining diesel vehicles with fuel level data, Webfleet can surface exact CO₂ values for science‑based target reporting, reducing manual calculation

Webfleet helps us run a safer, smoother fleet. We rely on live visibility, driver feedback and camera evidence daily, with EV data insights contributing to our successful transition to more sustainable operations. Without Webfleet’s support, we’d be struggling to keep the same standard.Gillian Lockley, Managing Director at Topspeed Couriers

This is a genuine partnership focused on practical sustainability and driver safety. Topspeed brings a clear vision and high standards. Webfleet brings the data, tools and support to make change stick day to day.Richard Parker, Consultant and partner manager, Webfleet UK & Ireland

Fewer incidents, stronger insurance position

Accident frequency has dropped sharply, supported by calmer EV driving and camera evidence. One year of third party claims once reached £170,000. Now the insurer has recognised the improved claims record with a 6 percent premium reduction.

Lower maintenance burden

In the diesel era, parts and repairs ran to £27,000 per month. With EVs and in‑house maintenance, Topspeed now reports monthly spend in the low thousands, helped by regenerative braking, fewer consumables and simpler drivetrains.

Happier, better rested drivers

Charging creates natural breaks. Drivers who rarely paused before now take two or three short rests a day, which helps safety and reduces stress. The cab environment is quieter and the tech feels modern, which supports retention.

Operational readiness for tenders

Customers and evaluators are asking tougher questions. With Webfleet data, a live EV programme and formal carbon accounting, Topspeed can evidence progress without pages of claims. That credibility helps in public sector frameworks where social value and sustainability carry weight.

Our insurance claims used to be significant, but since moving to EVs and using Webfleet’s cameras and driver feedback, our incident rate has come down dramatically. The insurer even offered us a premium reduction because of the improvement.Stephen Clegg, CEO and founder, Topspeed Couriers
